172. This passage is sometimes literally translated to say that the disciple must “hate” his parents and other family members. However, in this context the word is probably best read as comparative rather than absolute. The point is not that the parents are to be affirmatively disliked, but rather that they are to be subordinated to the work of discipleship.

173. The Greek word here, eremos, is often translated in this parable as “wilderness.” The term can also refer, however, to territory that is unoccupied but supports some vegetation, and is used as common grazing land. That meaning seems more appropriate in this context, where the ninety-nine sheep might be left unattended to some degree, but are presumably not to be placed at the undue risk that leaving them in a true wilderness would imply.
